8 Day Musical clock: Handbook Page 1 Next

Introduction.

This clock was designed and made for our client by Richard Simmonds, with Graham Bemment, Cabinet maker, and Alan Mudd, Enameller and Engraver. The concept of the clock was to produce a unique clock encompassing many things of interest to those living in and around the area of the Norfolk Broads. It was also an opportunity to include a tune not usually associated with clocks; that of "Oranges and Lemons". The movement includes a number of "complications": The quarter chiming has both Oranges and Lemons and the Westminster tunes. The calendar is perpetual, and the phase of the moon is shown. The time of sun rise and set, and a representation of the passage of the sun in the sky is shown. The going of the clock is controlled by a 5 legged Gravity escapement. This train also has Harrison maintaining power. The case, made from English Oak, features two marquetry panels, these reflect the concept of the clock being made in the Norfolk Broads for a family home within the Broads. The panel in the door has a Heron, the base panel has a Bittern. Both panels are set in the Autumn.
